The majority of the world's computing power and information is no longer in supercomputer centers and institutional machine rooms. Instead, it is now distributed in the hundreds of millions of personal computers all over the world. The goal of Distributed Potential is to unlock the information and computing power found within personal and business computers.
This change is critical to scientists whose research requires extreme computing power. Projects like SETI@home and Folding@home have attracted millions of participants who donate time on their home PCs to a scientific effort. Work is underway to create similar projects in many other areas, enabling scientific explorations that were previously infeasible.
Part Desktop Search, Part Distributed Network. Distributed Potential unlocks the power found within your need work, while also providing access to the content with in.
Distributed Potential is a distributed desktop / digital asset management system that will allow users to both search local and network based research content as well as harnessing the power of unused servers and desktop PC’s to create a distributed computational grid.
Find:
Enterprise Client
The Distributed Potential Client enables employees to find the information that matters most to them as fast as they can type. Files, email messages, attachments and contacts are all indexed locally. Additionally, the Enterprise Client has been enhanced with the following features:
Browser Client
Not all employees value the ability to search local desktop data due to the nature of their job function or because their IT department prohibits local storage of data. For those users, DP offers the DP Browser Client, a web-based application that enables end users to access their critical server-based information as fast as they can type. The browser client delivers the DP "find as you type" interface, while preserving the dynamic preview capabilities of the Enterprise Client, but only requires an Internet Explorer browser to operate.![]()
Enterprise Manager
The Distributed Potential Manager is used by the system administrator to configure DP with the appropriate settings for their environment. Using the manager, individual features can be turned off and removed from the interface, grayed out and left in the interface, or pre-configured with default settings.![]()
Enterprise Server
In organizations where large quantities of data is installed on network file servers, indexing that data repeatedly on each client can be wasteful from a network bandwidth and storage perspective. The Distributed Potential Server solves this problem by acting as a central scanning engine for network data sources, which enables users to search for network data from both Enterprise and Browser Clients.![]()
Content Connectors
What good is fast search without access to the critical enterprise information? Distributed Potential Edition includes a series of Content Connectors for providing access to email, attachments, files and contacts.
Content Connector for Files
The files stored on a user's local file system and network file servers are all indexed and searchable using the DP Content Connector for Files. Using this connector DP users are able to search over 225 different file formats, not just the file name, but the contents of those files.![]()
Content Connector for Microsoft Exchange and Outlook
Organizations who have invested in a Microsoft Exchange/Outlook email infrastructure can deploy the DP Content Connector for Microsoft Exchange and Outlook. This content connector uses the native Microsoft API, MAPI, to extract email messages, attachments and contacts from both locally cached and server-hosted Exchange systems. In addition to extracting data from Exchange, the DP Exchange content connector also can interact directly with the Outlook desktop application (email messages can be opened, replied to, forwarded, etc.).
